KOSOTO-GARI

Small Outer Reap

Kosoto Gari is classified as Ashi Waza (Foot/Leg Technique).

To start with, break your opponents balance to the back corner, then, reap their weighted leg and throw them backwards.

KOUCHI-GARI

Small Inner Throw

Kouchi Gari is classified as Ashi Waza (Foot/Leg Technique).

Step towards your opponent and break their balance to the back corner using the sleeve and lapel grip.

Bring your leg in between your opponents and reap their weighted leg forwards, in the direction their toes are pointing and throw them backwards, driving them on to their back using the lapel grip.

KOSHI-GURUMA

Hip Wheel

Koshi Guruma is classified as Koshi Waza (Hip Technique).

Break your opponent’s balance to the front corner, as you turn in, bring your hips all the way across the front of their hips (at least half of your hip should project beyond your opponents side), and move the lapel grip around the neck to control the head.

To finish the throw, raise the hips, pull on the sleeve and continue to bring the head through so your opponent wheels over your hips.

TSURIKOMI-GOSHI

Lift-Pull Hip Throw

Tsurikomi Goshi is classified as Koshi Waza (Hip Technique).

When your opponent’s balance has been broken to the front, using the sleeve to draw them on and the lapel to lift, bring your hips in “low”.

To finish the throw, load your opponent on to your hips, straighten your legs and push your hips backwards. Pull down hard with both hands and turn your opponent over your hips.

OKURI-ASHI-HARAI

Foot Sweep

Okuri Ashi Harai is classified as Ashi Waza (Foot/Leg Technique).

For this technique to work, you must stay loose and move smoothly. Break your opponents balance to the side as you step sideways.

Using the sole of your foot, sweep the ankle of your opponent’s trailing leg (be sure to sweep with your whole leg, not just your foot) in the direction the foot is travelling, lift up with the sleeve and lapel grips and guide your opponent on to their back.

TAI-OTOSHI

Body Drop

Tai Otoshi is classified as Te Waza (Hand Technique).

Break your opponent’s balance to the front corner, using the sleeve to draw them forwards and use the lapel to lift. Step between their legs, bring the second foot around to the outside, and replace your first foot to the outside of your opponent’s other leg so that it comes all the way across the front.

To finish the throw, pull forwards and down with the sleeve and lapel grip, throwing your opponent over your leg and on to their back in front of you.

HARAI-GOSHI

Sweeping Hip Throw

Harai Goshi is classified as Koshi Waza (Hip Technique).

Break your opponent’s balance to the front corner, using the sleeve and lapel grip to pull them to you, and as you do this, pivot around in front of them.

To finish the throw, sweep your opponent’s outside leg making contact with your thigh, twist around and pull strongly with both grips.

This technique was devised as a way of throwing an opponent who slips past the hip after an attempt to throw with Uki Goshi.

UCHI-MATA

Inner Thigh Reaping Throw

Uchi Mata is classified as Ashi Waza (Foot/Leg Technique).

After breaking your opponets balance to the front, using the sleeve and lapel grips to draw them forwards, pivot around and sweep upwards with your inside leg, making contact with your opponent’s inner thigh with your thigh.

To finish the throw, continue the pull through the sleeve and drive through the lapel grip as your leg lifts your opponent off the tatami.
