Hane Goshi
Hip Spring
Hane Goshi (Hip Spring) – Elevation, Rotation, and Dynamic Power in Judo
Hane Goshi, meaning “Hip Spring,” is a dynamic and powerful technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as a Koshi-waza (hip technique), it combines strong Kuzushi (off-balancing), deep hip placement, and an upward springing leg action to project an opponent with control and force.
A highly effective throw in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Hane Goshi is known for its lifting action, rotational power, and elegant execution.
What is Hane Goshi?
In Hane Goshi, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance forward before turning the hips deeply across uke’s body. As uke is loaded onto the hip, tori uses a powerful springing action of the leg to lift and rotate uke through the air.
Unlike Harai Goshi, which uses a sweeping action, Hane Goshi emphasizes upward lifting through the leg and hips.
Key characteristics include:
- Strong forward kuzushi
- Deep hip placement
- Springing leg action
- Close body positioning
- Powerful rotational movement
The upward “springing” motion is the defining characteristic of the technique.
Key Principles of Hane Goshi
1. Forward Kuzushi
Uke must be brought onto the toes and off-balanced forward before entry.
2. Springing Leg Action (Primary Mechanism)
The attacking leg lifts upward against uke’s leg — this is the main throwing mechanism.
3. Deep Hip Placement
Tori’s hips must be positioned below uke’s center of gravity to create elevation and rotation.
4. Close Body Positioning
Tori must stay tight to uke to maintain lifting power and control.
5. Full Body Coordination
The throw is generated through the combined action of hip rotation, leg lift, and upper body control.
Why Hane Goshi is Classified as Koshi-waza
Hane Goshi is classified as a Koshi-waza (hip technique) because:
- The hip acts as the central fulcrum of the throw
- Uke is loaded onto the hips before projection
- The springing leg assists the throw but does not act independently as the primary support point
Although the leg performs an important lifting action, Hane Goshi is classified as Koshi-waza because the throw fundamentally relies on hip loading and rotational control.
Why Hane Goshi is Important
Hane Goshi develops advanced Judo skills, including:
- Hip placement and control
- Timing and kuzushi awareness
- Rotational coordination
- Leg-driven lifting mechanics
- Grip control (Kumi-kata)
It is particularly valuable for judoka developing dynamic throwing power and advanced hip techniques.
Hane Goshi in Training and Competition
Hane Goshi is particularly effective when:
- The opponent moves forward aggressively
- Strong grip control is established
- You create forward momentum before entry
- Close body contact is achieved
In Randori and competition Judo, Hane Goshi is used:
- As a powerful attacking technique
- In combination attacks (Renraku-waza)
- To generate high-amplitude scoring throws
- As a transition from forward movement into rotation
Common combinations include:
- Kouchi Gari to Hane Goshi
- Ouchi Gari to Hane Goshi
- Failed Seoi Nage transitioning into Hane Goshi
- Hane Goshi to Uchi Mata
Hane Goshi vs Harai Goshi – Quick Distinction
- Hane Goshi: Upward springing lift → Koshi-waza
- Harai Goshi: Sweeping leg action → Koshi-waza
Hane Goshi lifts upward. Harai Goshi sweeps through.
Common Mistakes in Hane Goshi
- Attempting to sweep instead of spring upward
- Poor hip placement or distance from uke
- Weak forward kuzushi
- Leaning forward and losing posture
- Failing to coordinate the hip and leg action
Refining timing, lifting mechanics, and body positioning is essential for effective execution.
Conclusion
Hane Goshi is a dynamic and technically refined technique in Kodokan Judo, combining hip control, springing leg action, and rotational power to create a strong and effective throw.
As a Koshi-waza technique, it highlights the importance of coordinated movement and proper hip mechanics, allowing judoka to execute powerful throws through timing and control rather than strength alone.
Mastering Hane Goshi improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens rotational mechanics, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
