Hane Makikomi

Springing Wraparound Throw

Hane Makikomi (Springing Wraparound Throw) – Rotation, Sacrifice, and Dynamic Control in Judo

Hane Makikomi, meaning “Springing Wraparound Throw,” is a powerful and highly dynamic technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as a Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice technique), it combines strong Kuzushi (off-balancing), rotational body movement, and wrapping action to project an opponent through momentum and controlled sacrifice.

A dramatic and effective technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Hane Makikomi is valued for its ability to convert forward attacks into powerful rotational throws.

What is Hane Makikomi?

In Hane Makikomi, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance forward before turning across the body and wrapping the arm tightly around Uke. As Tori sacrifices sideways, the body rotation and wrapping action pull Uke over in a circular motion.

The technique often develops from failed or transitioning attacks such as Harai Goshi, Uchi Mata, or Hane Goshi.

Key characteristics include:

  • Strong forward kuzushi
  • Wrapping upper body action
  • Side sacrifice movement
  • Rotational momentum
  • Continuous circular projection

Unlike standing hip throws, Hane Makikomi relies on sacrifice and body rotation rather than maintaining upright posture throughout the throw.

Key Principles of Hane Makikomi

1. Forward Kuzushi

Uke must be brought forward and off-balanced before the wrapping action begins.

2. Wrapping Action (Primary Mechanism)

The tight wrapping movement around uke’s body is the main throwing mechanism.

3. Side Sacrifice Movement

Tori sacrifices body position by dropping sideways to generate momentum and rotation.

4. Strong Upper Body Control (Kumi-kata)

The grips and wrapping arm guide Uke’s posture and direction throughout the throw.

5. Continuous Rotational Movement

The throw should flow smoothly from entry into sacrifice and projection without interruption.

Why Hane Makikomi is Classified as Yoko-sutemi-waza

Hane Makikomi is classified as a Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice technique) because:

  • Tori intentionally sacrifices balance by dropping to the side
  • The throw is completed through rotational wrapping and body sacrifice
  • The technique depends on momentum and sacrifice positioning rather than remaining standing

Although Hane Makikomi often begins from hip or leg attack movements, its classification is based on the deliberate side sacrifice and wrapping action used to complete the throw.

Why Hane Makikomi is Important

Hane Makikomi develops advanced Judo skills, including:

  • Rotational timing and coordination
  • Use of momentum and body movement
  • Tactical transitions between techniques
  • Grip control (Kumi-kata)
  • Understanding sacrifice-based attacks

It is particularly valuable for learning how to continue attacking when an initial throw does not fully succeed.

Hane Makikomi in Training and Competition

Hane Makikomi is particularly effective when:

  • The opponent resists forward throwing attacks
  • Strong upper body contact is established
  • You transition from hip or leg techniques
  • Uke’s posture becomes unstable during movement

In Randori and competition Judo, Hane Makikomi is used:

  • As a follow-up attack
  • In combination sequences (Renraku-waza)
  • To convert failed forward attacks into scoring opportunities
  • To exploit momentum and rotational movement

Common combinations include:

  • Hane Goshi to Hane Makikomi

Hane Makikomi vs Harai Makikomi – Quick Distinction

  • Hane Makikomi: Springing lifting action combined with wraparound sacrifice → Yoko-sutemi-waza
  • Harai Makikomi: Sweeping action combined with wraparound sacrifice → Yoko-sutemi-waza

Hane Makikomi lifts and wraps. Harai Makikomi sweeps and wraps.

Common Mistakes in Hane Makikomi

  • Sacrificing too early without kuzushi
  • Weak wrapping action around Uke
  • Failing to maintain close body contact
  • Attempting to force the throw with strength
  • Breaking rotational momentum during execution

Refining timing, body positioning, and rotational flow is essential for effective execution.

Conclusion

Hane Makikomi is a dynamic and highly effective technique in Kodokan Judo, combining sacrifice, wrapping action, and rotational movement to produce a powerful and efficient throw.

As a Yoko-sutemi-waza technique, it demonstrates the importance of momentum, timing, and continuous attacking movement, allowing judoka to convert forward pressure into effective scoring opportunities.

Mastering Hane Makikomi improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens rotational coordination, and enhances tactical adaptability in both Randori and competitive Judo.
