Lift-Pull Foot Sweep

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi (Lift-Pull Foot Sweep) – Timing, Movement, and Precision in Judo

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi, meaning “Lift-Pull Foot Sweep,” is a refined and highly technical technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as an Ashi-waza (foot/leg technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), coordinated lifting and pulling action, and a sweeping foot motion to project an opponent with timing and control.

A classic movement-based technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is valued for its fluid execution, directional control, and efficiency.

What is Harai Tsurikomi Ashi?

In Harai Tsurikomi Ashi, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance forward and diagonally through coordinated lifting and pulling action before sweeping uke’s advancing foot.

The technique is performed as uke steps forward, making the foot momentarily light and vulnerable to the sweep.

Key characteristics include:

  • Forward and diagonal kuzushi
  • Coordinated lifting and pulling action
  • Precise foot sweeping motion
  • Continuous body movement
  • Smooth rotational projection

Unlike Deashi Harai, which focuses primarily on timing the advancing foot, Harai Tsurikomi Ashi places greater emphasis on coordinated upper body lifting and pulling mechanics.

Key Principles of Harai Tsurikomi Ashi

1. Forward and Diagonal Kuzushi

Uke must be brought off balance forward and diagonally before the sweep is applied.

2. Sweeping Foot Action (Primary Mechanism)

The sweeping motion against uke’s advancing foot is the main throwing mechanism.

3. Lifting and Pulling Coordination

The sleeve and lapel grips work together to lift and guide uke into the throw.

4. Precise Timing

The sweep must occur when uke’s foot becomes light during movement.

5. Continuous Body Movement

The throw works best as part of flowing movement rather than from a static position.

Why Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is Classified as Ashi-waza

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is classified as an Ashi-waza (foot/leg technique) because:

  • The foot sweep performs the primary throwing action
  • The throw is completed through timing and sweeping mechanics
  • The upper body supports kuzushi and direction but does not act as the main fulcrum

Although strong grip action is essential, the technique is classified based on the dominant role of the sweeping foot in executing the throw.

Why Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is Important

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi develops important Judo skills, including:

  • Timing and movement awareness
  • Balance disruption and kuzushi control
  • Coordination between upper and lower body
  • Precision in Ashi-waza techniques
  • Grip control (Kumi-kata)

It is particularly valuable for developing fluid, movement-based throwing ability.

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi in Training and Competition

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is particularly effective when:

  • The opponent steps forward aggressively
  • You establish strong grip control
  • Uke moves dynamically during exchanges
  • You create forward momentum before entry

In Randori and competition Judo, Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is used:

  • As a timing-based attacking technique
  • In movement-oriented combinations (Renraku-waza)
  • To disrupt rhythm and posture
  • To create clean directional throws through movement

Common combinations include:

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi vs Deashi Harai – Quick Distinction

  • Harai Tsurikomi Ashi: Strong lifting and pulling action combined with sweep → Ashi-waza
  • Deashi Harai: Primarily timing-based advancing foot sweep → Ashi-waza

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi emphasizes coordinated kuzushi. Deashi Harai emphasizes precise foot timing.

Common Mistakes in Harai Tsurikomi Ashi

  • Sweeping too early or too late
  • Attempting to kick instead of sweep
  • Weak lifting and pulling action
  • Poor coordination between grips and footwork
  • Attacking a fully weighted foot

Refining timing and coordinated movement is essential for effective execution.

Conclusion

Harai Tsurikomi Ashi is a refined and highly technical technique in Kodokan Judo, combining timing, coordinated kuzushi, and precise sweeping action to produce an efficient and controlled throw.

As an Ashi-waza technique, it highlights the importance of movement, coordination, and precision, allowing judoka to execute effective throws through timing and technical efficiency rather than strength alone.

Mastering Harai Tsurikomi Ashi improves movement awareness, strengthens kuzushi control, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
