Kosoto Gake (Small Outer Hook) – Control, Timing, and Close-Range Efficiency in Judo

Kosoto Gake, meaning “Small Outer Hook,” is a subtle and highly effective technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as an Ashi-waza (foot/leg technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), close-range body control, and a hooking leg action to break an opponent’s balance and drive them to the mat.

A valuable technique in Olympic Judo and high-level competition (shiai), Kosoto Gake is known for its efficiency, timing, and effectiveness in tight exchanges.

What is Kosoto Gake?

In Kosoto Gake, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance backward or slightly to the rear corner before hooking behind Uke’s leg and driving them down.

The attacking leg wraps behind uke’s leg, preventing recovery and collapsing the base through controlled pressure.

Key characteristics include:

  • Backward or diagonal kuzushi
  • Hooking leg action (not a reap or sweep)
  • Close body positioning
  • Continuous forward pressure
  • Controlled, direct projection

Unlike Kosoto Gari, which uses a reaping motion, Kosoto Gake traps the leg through a hooking action, making it more direct and compact.

Key Principles of Kosoto Gake

1. Backward Kuzushi

Uke must be brought off balance to the rear or rear corner before the hook is applied.

2. Hooking Action (Primary Mechanism)

The attacking leg hooks behind uke’s leg — this is the main throwing mechanism.

3. Close Body Positioning

Tori must stay tight to uke to prevent escape and maintain control.

4. Strong Upper Body Control (Kumi-kata)

The sleeve and lapel grips guide balance and ensure uke cannot step out.

5. Continuous Driving Pressure

The throw is completed by driving through uke, not by lifting or sweeping.

Why Kosoto Gake is Classified as Ashi-waza

Kosoto Gake is classified as an Ashi-waza because:

  • The leg performs the primary hooking action
  • The throw is completed by trapping and collapsing the base with the leg
  • The upper body supports control but does not act as the main throwing mechanism

Although Kosoto Gake involves strong body pressure and close contact, its classification is based on the dominant role of the leg in executing the hook.

Why Kosoto Gake is Important

Kosoto Gake develops key Judo skills, including:

  • Close-range balance disruption
  • Timing and positional awareness
  • Grip control (kumi-kata)
  • Tactical transitions between techniques
  • Counter-attacking ability

It is particularly effective in situations where space is limited and quick reactions are required.

Kosoto Gake in Training and Competition

Kosoto Gake is particularly effective when:

  • The opponent steps backward
  • You establish strong grip control
  • Close body contact is already in place
  • You transition from another attacking technique

In Randori and Olympic-level competition, Kosoto Gake is used:

  • As a counter to forward throws
  • In combination attacks (Renraku-waza)
  • To exploit backward movement
  • In tight grip-fighting exchanges

Common combinations include:

Kosoto Gake vs Kosoto Gari – Quick Distinction

  • Kosoto Gake: Hooking action → traps and drives → Ashi-waza
  • Kosoto Gari: Reaping action → removes base → Ashi-waza

Kosoto Gake hooks and drives. Kosoto Gari reaps and removes.

Common Mistakes in Kosoto Gake

  • Attempting to reap instead of hook
  • Entering without proper kuzushi
  • Standing too far from uke
  • Standing too close to uke
  • Failing to maintain upper body control
  • Not committing to the driving finish

Refining timing and positioning is essential for effective execution.

Conclusion

Kosoto Gake is a precise and efficient technique in Kodokan Judo, combining timing, control, and a leg-driven hooking action to break balance and complete the throw.

As an Ashi-waza technique, it highlights the importance of close-range control and coordination, allowing judoka to execute effective throws through positioning and timing rather than strength alone.

Mastering Kosoto Gake improves kuzushi awareness, enhances grip control, and strengthens tactical effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
