O Guruma
Large Wheel
O Guruma (Large Wheel) – Rotation, Control, and Dynamic Movement in Judo
O Guruma, meaning “Large Wheel,” is a classic and highly technical technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as an Ashi-waza (foot/leg technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), rotational movement, and controlled leg blocking action to project an opponent with timing and efficiency.
A dynamic technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), O Guruma is known for its large wheeling motion, directional control, and fluid execution.
What is O Guruma?
In O Guruma, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance forward and diagonally before extending the leg across uke’s body. As tori rotates the upper body, uke is wheeled over the blocking leg and projected to the mat.
Unlike sweeping techniques such as Harai Goshi, O Guruma does not rely on reaping or lifting. Instead, the extended leg acts as a barrier around which uke rotates.
Key characteristics include:
- Forward and diagonal kuzushi
- Large rotational movement
- Blocking leg action
- Strong upper body control
- Smooth wheeling projection
The broad circular motion gives the technique its name, creating the effect of a “major wheel.”
Key Principles of O Guruma
1. Forward and Diagonal Kuzushi
Uke must be brought off balance toward the front corner before entry.
2. Blocking Leg Action (Primary Mechanism)
The extended leg creates the main throwing mechanism, acting as the wheel axis for the throw.
3. Strong Rotational Movement
The upper body rotation drives uke over the blocking leg.
4. Close Body Positioning
Tori must remain connected to uke to maintain control and directional movement.
5. Coordinated Upper Body Control (Kumi-kata)
The sleeve and lapel grips guide balance, posture, and rotational direction.
Why O Guruma is Classified as Ashi-waza
O Guruma is classified as an Ashi-waza (foot/leg technique) because:
- The leg performs the primary blocking action
- The throw is completed through leg placement and rotational wheeling movement
- The hips assist positioning but are not the central throwing fulcrum
Although O Guruma involves body rotation similar to some hip throws, its classification is based on the dominant role of the blocking leg in creating the wheeling action.
Why O Guruma is Important
O Guruma develops advanced Judo skills, including:
- Rotational timing and coordination
- Directional kuzushi awareness
- Precision in leg positioning
- Grip control (Kumi-kata)
- Movement-based attacking strategy
It is particularly valuable for understanding rotational mechanics and controlling diagonal movement during throwing exchanges.
O Guruma in Training and Competition
O Guruma is particularly effective when:
- The opponent moves forward aggressively
- Strong grip control is established
- Uke’s posture becomes upright or extended
- You create diagonal movement before entry
In Randori and competition Judo, O Guruma is used:
- As a rotational attacking technique
- In combination attacks (Renraku-waza)
- To exploit forward momentum and posture
- To create dynamic movement-based throws
Common combinations include:
- Ashi Guruma to O Guruma
- Ouchi Gari to O Guruma
- O Guruma to Tai Otoshi
O Guruma vs Ashi Guruma – Quick Distinction
- O Guruma: Large wheeling action across the body → Ashi-waza
- Ashi Guruma: Smaller, more targeted wheel action with tighter pivot → Ashi-waza
O Guruma creates a broader wheel. Ashi Guruma creates a more compact rotational pivot.
Common Mistakes in O Guruma
- Attempting to sweep instead of block
- Poor timing of rotational entry
- Standing too far from uke
- Weak upper body control
- Entering without proper kuzushi
Refining timing, positioning, and rotational coordination is essential for effective execution.
Conclusion
O Guruma is a dynamic and technically refined technique in Kodokan Judo, combining rotational movement, timing, and leg-driven control to produce an efficient and effective throw.
As an Ashi-waza technique, it demonstrates the importance of directional movement and coordinated body mechanics, allowing judoka to execute powerful throws through timing and positioning rather than strength alone.
Mastering O Guruma improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens rotational mechanics, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
