Sumi Gaeshi (Corner Throw) – Timing, Sacrifice, and Rotational Control in Judo
Sumi Gaeshi, meaning “Corner Throw,” is a dynamic and highly effective technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as a Ma-sutemi-waza (rear sacrifice technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), controlled sacrifice movement, and lifting leg action to redirect an opponent through a rotational throw.
A valuable technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Sumi Gaeshi is known for its efficiency, timing, and ability to exploit forward pressure and aggressive movement.
What is Sumi Gaeshi?
In Sumi Gaeshi, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance forward and diagonally toward the corner before falling backward and lifting with the inside of the leg.
The lifting action redirects uke over tori in a circular motion toward the rear corner.
Key characteristics include:
- Forward and diagonal kuzushi
- Controlled backward sacrifice movement
- Lifting action with the inside leg
- Rotational redirection
- Smooth corner projection
Unlike Tomoe Nage, which throws directly overhead, Sumi Gaeshi redirects uke diagonally toward the corner.
Key Principles of Sumi Gaeshi
1. Forward and Diagonal Kuzushi
Uke must be brought forward and toward the corner before the sacrifice movement begins.
2. Sacrifice Action (Primary Mechanism)
Tori falls backward beneath uke — this controlled sacrifice is the main throwing mechanism.
3. Inside Leg Lift
The lifting leg elevates and redirects uke through the corner rather than straight overhead.
4. Strong Upper Body Control (Kumi-kata)
The grips guide uke’s balance, posture, and rotational direction throughout the throw.
5. Continuous Circular Movement
The throw should flow smoothly from kuzushi into sacrifice and rotational projection.
Why Sumi Gaeshi is Classified as Ma-sutemi-waza
Sumi Gaeshi is classified as a Ma-sutemi-waza (rear sacrifice technique) because:
- Tori intentionally sacrifices their own balance by falling backward
- The throw is completed through body drop, leg lift, and rotational redirection
- The technique relies on sacrifice movement rather than remaining standing
Although Sumi Gaeshi uses strong leg action and rotational control, its classification is based on the deliberate backward sacrifice used to execute the throw.
Why Sumi Gaeshi is Important
Sumi Gaeshi develops advanced Judo skills, including:
- Timing and movement awareness
- Use of opponent momentum
- Rotational coordination
- Full commitment to the attack
- Grip control (Kumi-kata)
- Transitions between standing and groundwork (Ne-waza)
It is particularly valuable for teaching judoka how to redirect force efficiently rather than resisting it directly.
Sumi Gaeshi in Training and Competition
Sumi Gaeshi is particularly effective when:
- The opponent drives forward aggressively
- Strong grip control is established
- Uke’s posture becomes upright or extended
- You create diagonal imbalance before sacrifice
In Randori and competition Judo, Sumi Gaeshi is used:
- As a counter to forward pressure
- In movement-based combinations (Renraku-waza)
- To exploit aggressive attacking posture
- To transition directly into groundwork control
Common combinations include:
- Failed Uchi Mata transitioning into Sumi Gaeshi
- Kouchi Gari to Sumi Gaeshi
- Grip pressure leading into Sumi Gaeshi
- Sumi Gaeshi to groundwork transitions
Sumi Gaeshi vs Tomoe Nage – Quick Distinction
- Sumi Gaeshi: Corner-directed lifting action with inside leg → Ma-sutemi-waza
- Tomoe Nage: Central overhead throw with foot placed on stomach or hip → Ma-sutemi-waza
Sumi Gaeshi redirects toward the corner. Tomoe Nage throws directly overhead.
Common Mistakes in Sumi Gaeshi
- Falling backward without proper kuzushi
- Poor diagonal angle of attack
- Weak lifting action with the leg
- Poor grip control during sacrifice
- Breaking the rotational flow of the throw
Refining timing, direction, and continuous movement is essential for effective execution.
Conclusion
Sumi Gaeshi is a refined and highly effective technique in Kodokan Judo, combining sacrifice, timing, and rotational control to produce a smooth and efficient throw.
As a Ma-sutemi-waza technique, it demonstrates the importance of leverage, movement, and directional control, allowing judoka to execute powerful throws through timing and precision rather than strength alone.
Mastering Sumi Gaeshi improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens tactical adaptability, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
