Ura Nage
Back Throw
Ura Nage (Back Throw) – Power, Timing, and Counter-Attacking Excellence in Judo
Ura Nage, meaning “Back Throw,” is one of the most powerful and spectacular techniques in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as a Ma-sutemi-waza (rear sacrifice technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), lifting power, and controlled sacrifice movement to project an opponent through timing and leverage.
A renowned counter-attacking technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Ura Nage is celebrated for its ability to reverse an opponent’s attack and transform forward momentum into a dramatic throw.
What is Ura Nage?
In Ura Nage, tori (the attacker) counters an opponent’s forward attack by securing close body contact, lifting uke (the opponent) from the mat, and arching backward to project them over the body.
The technique uses a combination of lifting action, body control, and sacrifice movement to create a powerful rearward throw.
Key characteristics include:
- Strong lifting action
- Rear sacrifice movement
- Close body positioning
- Powerful arching motion
- Dynamic backward projection
Unlike Ushiro Goshi, which uses the hips as the primary fulcrum, Ura Nage relies on lifting and rearward sacrifice to complete the throw.
Key Principles of Ura Nage
1. Timing the Counter
The technique must be applied as uke commits to a forward attack or overextends during movement.
2. Lifting Action (Primary Mechanism)
The controlled lifting of uke creates the main throwing mechanism.
3. Close Body Positioning
Tori must maintain tight contact to control uke’s center of gravity throughout the throw.
4. Rear Sacrifice Movement
The throw is completed through a controlled backward arch and sacrifice action.
5. Full Body Coordination
The lift, arch, and projection must work together as one continuous movement.
Why Ura Nage is Classified as Ma-sutemi-waza
Ura Nage is classified as a Ma-sutemi-waza (rear sacrifice technique) because:
- Tori intentionally sacrifices balance by falling backward
- The throw is completed through lifting action and rearward sacrifice
- The technique relies on body drop and momentum rather than remaining standing
Although Ura Nage involves significant lifting and upper body control, its classification is based on the deliberate backward sacrifice used to execute the throw.
Why Ura Nage is Important
Ura Nage develops advanced Judo skills, including:
- Counter-attacking timing
- Lifting mechanics and body control
- Balance awareness
- Grip control (Kumi-kata)
- Tactical adaptability under pressure
It is particularly valuable for understanding how to reverse an opponent’s attack and use their momentum against them.
Ura Nage in Training and Competition
Ura Nage is particularly effective when:
- The opponent attacks forward aggressively
- Close body contact is established
- Strong grip control is maintained
- Uke overcommits during an attack
In Randori and competition Judo, Ura Nage is used:
- As a counter to forward throws
- To exploit over-commitment and momentum
- In transitional attacking exchanges
- As a high-scoring counter-attack
Common counters include:
- Countering Uchi Mata with Ura Nage
- Countering Harai Goshi with Ura Nage
- Countering Seoi Nage with Ura Nage
- Countering O Goshi with Ura Nage
Ura Nage vs Ushiro Goshi – Quick Distinction
- Ura Nage: Rear sacrifice throw using lifting and backward arch → Ma-sutemi-waza
- Ushiro Goshi: Rear hip counter using lifting and hip control → Koshi-waza
Ura Nage sacrifices backward. Ushiro Goshi remains standing and redirects.
Common Mistakes in Ura Nage
- Attempting the counter before uke commits fully
- Poor body contact during the lift
- Relying on arm strength instead of whole-body coordination
- Falling backward without controlling uke
- Failing to maintain posture during the lifting phase
Refining timing, lifting mechanics, and sacrifice control is essential for effective execution.
Conclusion
Ura Nage is one of the most powerful and dramatic techniques in Kodokan Judo, combining lifting action, timing, and sacrifice movement to produce an effective counter-throw.
As a Ma-sutemi-waza technique, it demonstrates the importance of leverage, body coordination, and tactical awareness, allowing judoka to transform an opponent’s committed attack into a scoring opportunity.
Mastering Ura Nage improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens counter-attacking ability, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
