Yoko Gake
Side Hook
Yoko Gake (Side Hook) – Timing, Sacrifice, and Precision in Judo
Yoko Gake, meaning “Side Hook,” is a subtle yet highly effective technique in Kodokan Judo. Officially classified as a Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice technique), it combines precise Kuzushi (off-balancing), controlled sacrifice movement, and a hooking leg action to project an opponent through timing and directional control.
A valuable technique in both traditional training and competition Judo (shiai), Yoko Gake is renowned for its ability to exploit movement, disrupt balance, and convert small opportunities into effective throws.
What is Yoko Gake?
In Yoko Gake, tori (the attacker) breaks uke’s (the opponent’s) balance sideways or diagonally before hooking one of uke’s legs and sacrificing to the side. The combination of the hooking action and body drop causes uke to collapse sideways and fall to the mat.
Rather than relying on lifting or large rotational movement, Yoko Gake uses precise timing and commitment to the sacrifice action.
Key characteristics include:
- Sideways or diagonal kuzushi
- Hooking leg action
- Side sacrifice movement
- Close body positioning
- Controlled lateral projection
Unlike Kosoto Gake, which is typically performed from a standing position, Yoko Gake incorporates a deliberate sacrifice movement to complete the throw.
Key Principles of Yoko Gake
1. Sideways Kuzushi
Uke must be brought off balance to the side before the sacrifice movement begins.
2. Hooking Action (Primary Mechanism)
The hooking movement against uke’s leg creates the main throwing mechanism.
3. Side Sacrifice Movement
Tori sacrifices balance by dropping to the side to increase the effectiveness of the hook.
4. Close Body Positioning
Maintaining close contact ensures control and prevents uke from recovering balance.
5. Continuous Directional Movement
The throw should flow smoothly from kuzushi into hook and sacrifice without hesitation.
Why Yoko Gake is Classified as Yoko-sutemi-waza
Yoko Gake is classified as a Yoko-sutemi-waza (side sacrifice technique) because:
- Tori intentionally sacrifices balance by falling to the side
- The throw is completed through body drop and hooking action
- The technique relies on sacrifice positioning rather than remaining upright
Although Yoko Gake uses a distinct hooking action with the leg, its classification is based on the deliberate side sacrifice used to execute the throw.
Why Yoko Gake is Important
Yoko Gake develops important Judo skills, including:
- Timing and movement awareness
- Balance disruption and kuzushi control
- Precision in sacrifice techniques
- Grip control (Kumi-kata)
- Tactical adaptability in close-range exchanges
It is particularly valuable for understanding how to combine leg action with sacrifice movement to create effective throwing opportunities.
Yoko Gake in Training and Competition
Yoko Gake is particularly effective when:
- The opponent shifts weight onto one leg
- Strong grip control is established
- Close body contact is maintained
- You create sideways movement before sacrifice
In Randori and competition Judo, Yoko Gake is used:
- As a timing-based sacrifice throw
- In combination attacks (Renraku-waza)
- To exploit committed movement and imbalance
- To transition directly into groundwork (Ne-waza) opportunities
Common situations include:
- Yoko Gake from kenka yotsu
- Kosoto Gari to Yoko Gake
- Failed forward attack transitioning into Yoko Gake
- Yoko Gake to groundwork control sequences
Yoko Gake vs Yoko Guruma – Quick Distinction
- Yoko Gake: Side hook with sacrifice movement → Yoko-sutemi-waza
- Yoko Guruma: Large rotational wheel using side sacrifice → Yoko-sutemi-waza
Yoko Gake hooks and collapses. Yoko Guruma wheels and rotates.
Common Mistakes in Yoko Gake
- Sacrificing without proper kuzushi
- Hooking too high on uke’s leg
- Dropping before establishing control
- Weak grip coordination
- Failing to commit to the side sacrifice movement
Refining timing, hooking precision, and sacrifice control is essential for effective execution.
Conclusion
Yoko Gake is a precise and tactically effective technique in Kodokan Judo, combining sacrifice movement, timing, and hooking action to produce a controlled and efficient throw.
As a Yoko-sutemi-waza technique, it demonstrates the importance of leverage, balance disruption, and coordinated movement, allowing judoka to execute effective throws through timing rather than strength alone.
Mastering Yoko Gake improves kuzushi awareness, strengthens sacrifice technique proficiency, and enhances effectiveness in both Randori and competitive Judo.
