Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi - Supporting Foot Lift-Pull Throw

Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi is an Ashi Waza (Foot & Leg Technique) in Judo.

Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi is often used as a direct attack and also used as an effective throwing technique as part of a combination to initially off-balance an opponent, commonly leading into Osoto Gari or Harai Goshi, as well as many other different throws.

There are several "competition" variations of Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi, quite often as a result of utilising different gripping strategises.

Here's a basic description of how to do Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi:

1. Kuzushi (Off-balance): The first step is to disrupt your Uke's balance by breaking their posture or creating an imbalance through grip fighting and movement, resulting in their weight being forwards.

2. Entry: Step to your opponents instep, on the lapel side, angling your toes towards them. Draw them forwards through the sleeve grip and lift through the lapel to break their balance to the front corner.

3. Propping: Place the bottom of your foot, on the sleeve side, on the front of your opponents ankle, blocking them from being able to step forwards.

4. Lifting/Pulling: Simultaneously, continue to pull through the sleeve grip and lift through the lapel, using their upper body strength to exploit the off-balance created in the previous steps.

5. Completion: To finish the throw, twist your body backwards, bringing your opponent right over your foot and on to their back.
