Seoi Nage - Shoulder Throw

Seoi Nage is classified as Te Waza (Hand Technique) in Judo.

Seoi Nage involves using your elbow to drive into your opponents armpit, to help lift and throw them over your back.

Here's a basic breakdown of how Seoi Nage is typically executed:

  1. Grip: On the sleeve and high up on the lapel.
  2. Kuzushi (Off-balance): Draw your opponent forwards using the sleeve  and lapel grip. Create space on the lapel and bring your elbow across the front of your opponent and drive it under their armpit.
  3. Entry: Pivot around, placing both of your feet,  shoulder width a part, slightly in front your opponents. Bring your hips across the front of your opponent. Have a soft bend in your knees.
  4. Execution: To finish the throw, rotate through, keeping tension in the sleeve, driving the elbow into the armpit, bringing your opponent right over.

Seoi Nage requires precise timing, coordination, and proper use of leverage to be effective. It is important to maintain a high grip on the lamp and to create space from the body before turning in for the throw otherwise a lot of pressure can be put on your own wrist, elbow and shoulder resulting in discomfort and potentially injury.
