Tomoe Nage - Circular Throw

Tomoe Nage is classified as Ma Sutemi Waza (Rear Sacrifice Technique) in Judo.

Tomoe Nage involves breaking your opponent's balance, then sacrificing your own position to the rear, placing your foot on your opponents abdomen and then throwing them over to the top of your head.

Here's a basic breakdown of how Tomoe Nage is typically executed:

  1. Grip: On the sleeve and high on the lapel.
  2. Kuzushi (Off-balance): Draw your opponent forwards through the sleeve and lapel grips, breaking their balance to the front. As you do this start to lower yourself down into a "sitting" position.
  3. Entry: At the same time, bend your other leg and place the sole of your foot on your opponent's abdomen, whilst continuing to pull them forwards through both grips.
  4. Execution: To finish the throw, continue to pull through both grips, using your foot/leg to support the tension as your opponent goes right over the top of you and on to their back.

Tomoe Nage requires precise timing, coordination, and proper use of leverage to be effective and 100% commitment through sacrificing your position.
