Tsuri Goshi - Lifting Hip Throw

Tsuri Goshi is classified as Koshi Waza (Hip Technique) in Judo.

Tsuri Goshi involves breaking your opponent's posture at the hips, gripping the belt, lifting them on to your hips and throwing them over.

Here's a basic breakdown of how Tsuri Goshi is typically executed:

  1. Grip: On the sleeve and high on the lapel.
  2. Kuzushi (Off-balance): Step forwards, bend your opponent towards you and replace your lapel grip around the back, taking hold of the belt.
  3. Entry: Turn and bring your other foot to your opponent's instep, bend your knees and using the belt grip, lift your opponent onto your hips, pulling him tightly against you.
  4. Execution: Whilst continuing to lift your opponent through the belt grip, straighten your legs and twist your hips. Pull down hard on the sleeve and bring your opponent right over to finish the throw.

Tsuri Goshi requires precise timing, coordination, and proper use of leverage to be effective and is commonly used when an opponent is "defending" in a bent over position.
